41. "Let me see your scars..."
Lin asking Kya
They were laying in the bed, both naked. The sweat had already sunk into their skin. The sun was just setting, making the room glow with golden light. Lin was laying with Kya by her right side. The waterbender was looking at her lover with care. She then reached her hand to touch the scarred cheek. She slowly caressed the soft skin, feeling gentle imperfections. Lin closed her eyes and hummed out of the pleasant sensation. Then, she opened her eyes, turned her head to Kya and said softly,
“Let me see your scars…”
The waterbender shifted to show her right hand and started explaining,
“This tiny one on my finger is from when Tenzin broke a vase while practicing airbending. This one,” she pointed at a long but thin scar leading from her wrist to her elbow, “is from when I fell from a boulder. Now this,” she switched hands, “See this lighter spot?” Lin nodded. “I burned myself with boiling water. That’s actually how I found out I’m a waterbender,” she chuckled. “And um…” she bent her knee so that Lin could see a big red scar at the back of Kya’s thigh. “This one is from my travels… I haven’t told anyone, but… I was attacked and robbed by a firebender. I could have handled him, but I was so terrified I froze. Ugh, it’s so embarrassing… I tried to heal it on my own but, well, you see the result.”
Lin tried to look Kya in the eyes, but the waterbender was facing down. So Lin gently grabbed the scarred leg and planted dozens of kisses on the mark. She then grabbed Kya’s face and said,
“Scars are not a sign of weakness, but of strength.”
That was all she said. She then hugged the waterbender tightly and laid back down, dragging Kya to lay her head on Lin’s chest.
Kya remembered these words for the rest of her life.
